Thanksgiving Holiday And Its Celebrations
Thanksgiving Day is the fourth Thursday in November, but many Americans take a day of vacation on the following Friday to make a four-day weekend, during which they may travel long distances to visit family and friends.
The holiday dates back to 1621, the year after the Puritans arrived in Massachusetts, determined to practice their religion without interference of the government. After a rough winter, in which about half of them died, they built a friendship with neighboring Indians, who taught them how to plant corn and other crops that could flourish in New England's soil and climate.
The next fall's bountiful harvest inspired the Pilgrims to give thanks by holding a feast and celebration for their friends and community.

The day after Thanksgiving is known in retail parlance as Black Friday, on of the major U.S. shopping days. The origin of Black Friday comes from the shift to profitability during the holiday season. Black Friday was when retailers went from being unprofitable ( in the red) to being profitable (in the black). This term dates back to pre-internet when accounting was done by hand in ledgers and “red ink” was used to indicate a loss.

Father's Day is a holiday celebrated annually in the United States on the third Sunday of June. The first recorded observance of Fathers Day in the US was on July 5, 1908, when a West Virginia church sponsored a Sunday sermon in memory of the 362 men who had died in the previous December's explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah . However, it was not until 1972 that Father's Day became a nationwide holiday in the United States, 58 years after President Woodrow Wilson made Mother's Day official. The more cynical among us might surmise that businesses such as florists did not see the obvious sales potential of a day celebrating, Dad.
The campaign to celebrate the nation’s fathers did not meet with the same enthusiasm as Mother's Day, perhaps because, as one florist explained, "fathers haven’t the same sentimental appeal that mothers have" . In 1916, President Wilson honored the day by using telegraph signals to unfurl a flag in Spokane when he pressed a button in Washington, D.C. . Today, Father's Day is celebrated in the United States on the third Sunday of June and is a day to honor fathers, fatherhood, and our father figures.
